CFParrish(Having to give credit where credit is due, much of today’s narrative, the bits, pieces, and little details were put together by my mother and my aunt for the occasion of my grandparents 50th wedding anniversary in 1985.)

My great grandfather, Charles Franklin Parrish, the son of William and Lucretia (Comer) Parrish, was born on Valentine’s Day in 1870 in Putnam County, Ohio. Charles’ mother  died when he was just 18 months old and he was raised for a time by an uncle “Jack” Parrish, at the Hedges Hotel (may have been known as the Parrish House at the time.) which was owned by his uncle. When Charles was 12, he then went to live with his brother John Henry & Betty (Baughman) Parrish.

Charles married Clara L. Medley on February 24, 1895, at the home of Elias Patten, Justice of the Peace, with Mrs. Patten witnessing the marriage. They started housekeeping 4 3/4 miles from Paulding, Ohio, in Jackson Twp. with 30 acres of land he had bought before they were married. In the winter, he worked in the woods hauling logs to the small village of Hedges to make whiskey barrels, and in the summer, Charles farmed with his horses. He and Clara were the parents to eight children: Jesse, Mabel, Howard, Cecile, a set of twins – Walter and Wallace, Paul, and Ruth.

In 1911, Charles built a new barn and in 1913 he built a new home for his family. At that time he owned 80 acres of land, and in 1924, he purchased another 40 acres along the Charloe Trail, 4 miles east of Paulding, Ohio.

Charles was a good farmer and livestock breeder, raising registerd Duroc hogs – the first pedigree dating 1911. He also raised registered Holstein cattle and registered Belgium horses. Charles was a school board member for a number of years, a road inspector, Township Trustee, and served on the Election Board.
